Jeremiah Hatch & the Utes
"Jeremiah Hatch is Senator Orrin Hatch's great-grandfather and my great-great-grandfather. He was one of the first settlers in the Uintah Basin, and was sent by Brigham Young in 1877 to serve as a missionary and Indian agent to the war-like Utes. In spite of some life-threatening experiences with the Indians, he had great influence with them and was widely known as their friend. He spoke several dialects. They called him 'Uncle Jerry.' This painting depicts Jeremiah and his son, Joe (my great-grandfather), meeting by chance with a Ute hunting party. Split Mountain on the Green River is in the background." - Valoy Eaton
